Studio Disegnat Attending the International Charter Expo (ICE) 2024 in Amsterdam: A Design for Yacht-Charter Perspective
Attending the International Charter Expo (ICE) 2024 in Amsterdam from November 13th to 15th was a remarkable experience for us as trade visitors and design studio owners. The event, held at the EXPO Greater Amsterdam in Vijfhuizen, marked a significant shift from its previous two years in Zagreb, offering a fresh perspective on the yacht charter industry. And we must add it’s our 6th participation in row.
A Refreshing Change of Venue
The transition to Amsterdam provided a more relaxed atmosphere, with the spacious hall and abundant natural light creating a welcoming environment. This change not only enhanced the overall experience but also facilitated better networking opportunities among attendees. Compared to Zagreb, the venue in Amsterdam allowed for a more organized and fluid event flow, making it easier to connect with exhibitors and visitors.
Diverse Exhibitors and Visitors
ICE 2024 showcased a rich diversity of yacht charter and sailing-related exhibitors and visitors. It was encouraging to reconnect with long-standing industry partners and meet new entrants bringing fresh ideas and innovations. This blend of tradition and novelty underscored the dynamic nature of the yacht charter sector.
Impressive Numbers and Innovations
The expo attracted over 1,500 participants from more than 50 countries, featuring over 550 exhibitors. Throughout the three-day event, more than 25,000 B2B meetings were arranged via the Handshake application, highlighting the event's efficiency in fostering business connections.
The new Handshake app, integral to scheduling these meetings, introduced innovative features aimed at enhancing user experience. While these updates improved functionality, they also came with a learning curve compared to the previous version. Many users needed time to familiarize themselves with the updated interface and features to maximize its potential.
Industry Challenges in 2024 and Looking Ahead to 2025
The 2024 season presented several challenges for charter companies. Rising costs, environmental regulations, and marina availability were significant concerns. Looking ahead to 2025, the yacht charter industry is poised for steady growth, driven by increasing demand for luxury experiences and advancements in yacht technology and design for yacht-charter. However, challenges such as sustainability regulations and economic fluctuations remain key factors to consider.
Design Challenges in the Yacht Charter Industry
From a designer’s perspective, many yacht charter businesses struggle with branding and communication. Some of the most common issues include:
Poor Branding Communication: Many yacht charter companies fail to present a cohesive and compelling brand identity, leading to confusion and lack of memorability.
Amateur-Looking Brand Identity: Selling a luxurious experience with a poorly designed logo, outdated website, or inconsistent visuals creates a disconnect with high-end clientele.
Generic Copywriting: Many brands fail to differentiate themselves with unique storytelling, relying on generic descriptions that don’t captivate potential clients.
Weak Social Media Presence: Inconsistent or uninspired social media content fails to engage audiences, missing opportunities for direct interaction with potential customers.
Lack of a Strong Visual and Verbal Identity: Many companies look and sound the same, making it difficult for customers to distinguish between them.
Competing on Price Instead of Quality and Storytelling: Instead of highlighting unique selling points and experiences, many companies fall into a price war, undervaluing the premium aspect of their services.
As designers, we focus on crafting design for yacht-charter solutions that elevate branding, ensuring that every touchpoint—from websites to brochures and exhibition booths—communicates exclusivity, quality, and a compelling story.
